Does poultry litter have weed seeds? Actually, NO. A paper by Mississippi State — citing research from Auburn, Kentucky, Georgia and Virginia Tech — found this to be untrue. But poultry litter is still part of the problem.

Why Use Litter-FIX?

New safety standards changed how litter works

Most poultry houses use a litter treatment to control ammonia gas and moisture. The majority rely on Aluminum Sulfate, Sulfuric Acid, Sodium Hydrogen Sulfate, or Sodium Sulfate.

Acidifiers

They lower soil pH

Each of these is a soil acidifier used to LOWER pH — the exact opposite of what you'd want from litter. If your soil is already acidic, it compounds the issue.

Salts

They leave salt behind

These sulfates leave salt in the soil, which pulls moisture away from the plant root.

Lock-up

Aluminum binds phosphorus

Aluminum bonds with phosphorus, making it unavailable to the plant — which allows broomsedge and other weeds to thrive.

Moisture control matters too. Recommended litter moisture is 20–25% to suppress harmful bacteria — but that also prevents beneficial soil bacteria from forming. Every time we apply treated or low-moisture litter, we go backward on controlling acid and building organic matter. This is why lime alone may not solve weeds, low pH, and lack of production.

How Litter-FIX Works

Reactivate the litter you already have

After applying Litter-FIX, the ammonium sulfate treatments are rapidly dissolved into ammonium and sulfate components. Added soil amendments flush the salts left by the sulfates, then added microbes rapidly begin converting ammonium into nitrate through nitrification.

Litter-FIX is a liquid, carbon-based bio-stimulant containing specific bacteria to speed decomposition once litter is in the field. It rebuilds organic matter, raises soil pH, and converts the ammonium sulfate back into usable ammonium nitrate — plus root-growth promoters help the plant take up more nutrients and moisture.

Application: Typical rate is 1 gallon mixed with 25–30 gallons of water per acre. We recommend FLOOD tips or coarse spray tips to ensure proper ground coverage and penetration.
