Granular potash is mined potassium chloride
Typically it's 47% chloride and also contains iron (the redder the prill, the more iron). While granular potash does provide potassium, it also releases chloride — a salt that negatively affects soil pH balance and pulls moisture away from the root.
The chloride in potash causes the soil to lock up, so potassium and other nutrients can't properly reach the plant. Depending on weather and soil pH, typically only 0.1% to 2.0% of the potassium is ever used.
Too much iron is a problem too. Small amounts are necessary for chlorophyll production, but too much iron inhibits the plant's ability to absorb energy from sunlight — which affects protein building. And because granular applications require heavier amounts, they tend to be very costly while still may not provide enough usable potassium.
